Frequently Asked Questions
General Information
The nominal duration of the civil engineering education is four years. as in all engineering departments at İEÜ, along with Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, introduction to engineering and programming courses are given in the first year. In the subsequent years, core courses and major area courses are offered. In the second year, some core engineering courses such as Material Science, Technical Drawing, Engineering Mechanics: Statics and Dynamics, Engineering Mathematics, Probability for Engineers, Strength of Materials, Fluid Mechanics are also included. From the third year on, courses are taken from specific major area course for civil engineering, such as Hydromechanics, Structural Analysis, Reinforced Concrete and Reinforced Concrete Structures Design are examples of such courses. The courses of the fourth grade include elective courses. In addition, Engineering Capstone course will be taken. For more detail about the Course Structure and elective courses, please look at this link https://cie.ieu.edu.tr/en/curr.
Civil engineering is including a very large sector that undertakes the construction of many infrastructure projects, in addition of the buildings. There are different departments within Civil Engineering as Structural Engineering, Soil Mechanics, Construction Materials, Hydraulics and Water Resources, Coastal and Harbor Engineering, Management, and Transportation Engineering. Civil engineers are working in the sectors such as builing project, prefabricated structures, energy and infrastructure, dams, power plants transportation investments such as highways / bridges / tunnels / railways, airports, ground improvements.
In most of the 2nd and 3rd year lessons, experiments are done in the laboratory. İEÜ Department of Civil Engineering has 4 laboratories (Geotechnic, Hydraulic, Construction Materials and Structural Engineering Laboratory).
The language of instruction is English. In the case of the preparatory class, an intensive English education is given for 1 year.
Internships in our department are 20 days at the office and 20 days at the construction site. For more detail: https://cie.ieu.edu.tr/en/internships
